The Customs House (Rong Phasi Roi Chak)

Nestled along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, The Customs House is a remarkable reminder of Bangkok’s transformation into an international trading hub during the late nineteenth century. Constructed in 1888 during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, the building once served as the principal customs office where imported and exported goods were processed as global commerce expanded throughout the Kingdom of Siam.

Designed in a European architectural style that was highly fashionable at the time, the structure reflects the country’s growing engagement with international trade and diplomacy. Its riverside location was strategically chosen, as the Chao Phraya River functioned as Bangkok’s most important transportation route before the development of modern road networks.

Throughout its history, the building has witnessed significant economic and social changes, standing at the crossroads of Thailand’s modernization. After decades of disuse, the historic site is now being carefully restored as part of a major redevelopment led by Rabbit Holdings (BTS Group) in partnership with Langham Hospitality Group. The Customs House and the adjacent historic Post Office building are being transformed into The Langham, Customs House, Bangkok — a 78-room five-star riverside hotel set to open in late 2026, featuring the Michelin three-starred T’ang Court restaurant and Chuan Spa, while preserving the site’s original teak floors, grand staircase, and neo-Palladian façade.

The Customs House remains a valuable symbol of Bangkok’s commercial past, illustrating how trade connections helped shape the city into the dynamic metropolis it is today — and soon, a living landmark once again.
